Nearly half of households in the Indo-Pacific depend on agriculture for their income. Small-scale and subsistence agriculture is also critical to food security.

Agriculture, fisheries, and the broader food system are at the front line of climate change risks. Climate change impacts food systems across all dimensions of food and nutrition security.

Strategic direction

Australia's agricultural development investments prioritise four key areas of engagement:

  • Adapting agriculture to be more climate resilient.
  • Increasing incomes for smallholder farmers.
  • Strengthening food security and nutrition.
  • Improving plant and animal biosecurity.

There are considerable synergies between these four areas of engagement and investments will often address multiple areas.

Our programs work to:

  • Support smallholder farmers to adapt to climate change with climate resilient agriculture practices.
  • Continue to support agriculture as a key driver of economic recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic and global food price crisis.
  • Support small-scale farmers and entrepreneurs, particularly women, to meet their livelihood and food and nutrition security needs.
  • Mobilise whole of Australian Government support for surveillance, response and preparedness for key biosecurity threats.
  • Strengthen data collection to support early warning systems for food and nutrition insecurity.
  • Engage communities and policy makers on climate resilient agriculture.
  • Advocate for more open agricultural trading systems, through international and regional fora.

Program highlights

  • Partnered with the private sector in Indonesia on improved fertiliser practises which benefitted more than 70,000 smallholder famers and increased their incomes by at least 30 per cent.
  • Supported the Centre for Pacific Crops and Trees (CePaCT) to conserve and distribute climate resilient food crops across the Pacific.
  • Strengthened food security and nutrition for farmers in the atoll states of Tuvalu and Kiribati through climate resilient farming practices.
  • Reduced the spread of African Swine Fever in Timor-Leste and Papua New Guinea.
  • Reached 30,000 Pacific farmers (41 per cent women) with planting materials, land preparation and training on improved agricultural practices.  
  • Helped more than 17,000 rural women and men in Timor-Leste improve their food and nutrition security.
