Public Interest Disclosures

The Public Interest Disclosure Act 2013 (Ctlh) promotes integrity and accountability in the Commonwealth public sector by encouraging the disclosure of information about suspected wrongdoing, protecting people who make disclosures from adverse consequences relating to the making of a disclosure, and requiring agencies to take action to ensure that disclosures are properly investigated and dealt with.

How to make a public interest disclosure

A disclosure may be made anonymously or openly. While a disclosure may be made orally or in writing, if you wish to make an anonymous disclosure the department recommends sending your disclosure to PID@dfat.gov.au

Information contained in the disclosure should be:

  • clear and factual
  • so far as possible, avoid speculation, personal attacks and emotive language
  • contain supporting evidence where that is available
  • where possible, identify any witnesses to the disclosable conduct
