Manildra Group – from grain to mill to the world

As a world-class advanced manufacturer of premium Australian food and industrial products, Australian, family-owned Manildra Group is ready to seize the opportunities of the EU market.

Manildra Group is a global agribusiness that began as a single flour mill in Manildra NSW in 1952. It now exports 600,000 tonnes of Australian-grown and made goods annually to dozens of countries.

Manildra Group uses 100 per cent of the Australian wheat grain in its range of value-added products. These include wheat flours, bakery mixes, vital wheat gluten, modified proteins, wheat starch, modified starches, syrups, ethanol, sugars, stockfeed, and oils.

Manildra Group has a global reputation for quality and service, underpinned by well-established distribution channels, with secure and transparent supply chains that provide traceability back to the source of Australian wheat, sugarcane and canola farms.

How the Australia – European Union Free Trade Agreement could help

Making Australian agri-food exports more competitive

The EU is a new market for Manildra Group, as it has effectively been closed to Manildra Group due to high, prohibitive tariffs. The EU-FTA will provide a meaningful trade diversification opportunity for Manildra Group on a range of grain-based products including vital wheat gluten, modified proteins to wheat starches and more.

Many of Manildra Group’s agri-food products currently face tariffs of up to €512/tonne [A$896/tonne] when imported into the EU from Australia and are at a disadvantage compared to some of their competitors from other markets who already have duty-free or preferential access. A key outcome for Manildra Group is a new, annual, duty-free 20,000 tonne tariff rate quota for wheat gluten. The A-EU FTA will result in the elimination of tariffs on a range of grain-related products into the EU, including current tariffs on wheat starch of up to €224/tonne (A$392/tonne) eliminated over 5 years. This will make Australia’s exports significantly more competitive when exported to the EU, a high-income market of 450 million consumers.

Making trade easier

The A-EU FTA would support more efficient trade by improving the transparency and consistency of border processes. Clearer, more predictable requirements would help reduce administrative burden and support reliable movement of goods between Australia and the EU.

Quote from Managing Director

John Honan, Managing Director

“The EU is one of the world’s largest markets and represents a significant opportunity for market diversification. An Australia–EU FTA would unlock a market that has not been accessible to Manildra Group in our 75-year history. We welcome the reduction in trade barriers and look forward to strengthening exports of Australian-made, value-added products to Europe.”
