Infrastructure

Australia supports high-quality, affordable and sustainable infrastructure and capacity building with a focus on long-term development and economic outcomes, climate resilience, local content and sustainable financing. Reliable, quality infrastructure enhances economic and social wellbeing, helps mitigate climate impacts, strengthens resilience, improves security and expands access to education and health services.

Australia responds to the infrastructure needs of our partners by supporting investment that is transparent, meets genuine needs, delivers long-term development and economic benefits, and adheres to the highest international standards of debt sustainability.

We focus on a range of critical sectors including energy, information and communication technologies, and transport.

  • Access to reliable, affordable energy is vital for businesses and for communities. Energy services enable companies to deliver goods and services, modernise agriculture and support productivity in enterprises, homes, schools and health facilities. Electricity grids also provide access to safe lighting and essential services such as banking and financial systems.
  • Investment in information and communication technologies (ICT) delivers broad economic benefits through higher productivity, lower transaction costs, new economic opportunities and job creation. ICT, including smartphones, is transformational in improving financial inclusion and access to health and education services.
  • Transport infrastructure development, including ports and airports, unlocks investment and supports economic growth through improved productivity and efficiency. It links resources to industry, people to jobs, and products to markets. Sustainable and reliable transport access also connects people to health and education services.

Through our aid program, Australia also delivers infrastructure in additional sectors including urban infrastructure, roads, health, education, water and sanitation, supporting economic and social development.

Australia supports infrastructure development through initiatives and programs across the project lifecycle. We work with multilateral institutions, governments and the private sector, and encourage the growth of public–private partnerships.
