Almondco – New opportunities to supply a ‘Super Food’ to Europe

Almondco has been supplying almond products to the world since 1944. This grower-owned company processes and markets the crops of more than 80 per cent of all almond growers in Australia and exports to more than 30 countries.

In a global market that already produces more than one million tonnes of almonds per year, there is strong growth in demand driven by increased consumption of plant-based dairy alternatives and healthy protein and high fibre snacks.  Almondco has developed a sales network that spreads across Europe, China, India, Asia Pacific (including Australia & New Zealand) and Middle East countries which is supported by its world class three processing facilities located in South Australia and New South Wales.

How the Australia – European Union Free Trade Agreement could help

Making Australian almonds more competitive

The Australia-EU FTA creates new opportunities for almond producers in Australia by eliminating the current tariffs of up to 5.6% on in-shell almonds and up to 3.5% on shelled almonds. The EU almond market is worth more than €2 billion, with Spain, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and France being the main importers. The United States is currently the EU’s main supplier of almonds (more than 90% of shelled almonds) with Australia being the major southern hemisphere producing country which provides a counter seasonal alternative. The tariff reduction under the FTA will make Australian almonds more competitive in Europe and support trade diversification for both Australia and the EU.

Making trade easier

The A-EU FTA will support more efficient trade by improving the transparency and consistency of border processes. Clearer, more predictable requirements will help reduce administrative burden and support reliable movement of goods between Australia and the EU.

Quote from Managing Director

Brenton Woolston, Managing Director

Almondco’s continued commitment to quality and food safety has helped it to forge and embed relationships with discerning buyers, including retail re-packers, food manufacturers and confectioners, who demand consistency and reliability. The FTA will allow us to be more price competitive in Europe and present further opportunity to leverage our counter seasonal Australian almond supply.
