Abrolhos Octopus catches octopus in the cool clear waters of West Australia’s Turquoise Coast, from Greenhead and Geraldton to the Abrolhos Islands as well as along the state’s southern coast. This species of octopus, the Western Rock Octopus [Octopus Djinda meaning “Star of the Sea”], is unique to Western Australia and holds the prized MSC Certification – one of only two octopus fisheries worldwide to achieve this standard. The Perth-based company provides frozen octopus to premium markets in Europe, the Middle East, Asia and across Australasia.
How the Australia – European Union Free Trade Agreement could help
Making Australian octopus more competitive
Australian octopus exports to the EU face a tariff of 8%. Under the Australia-EU FTA this tariff will be eliminated once the agreement enters into force. This will make Australian octopus much more competitive with other major exporters to the EU. Abrolhos Octopus has been certified as sustainable by the Maritime Stewardship Council due to its low impact, sustainable and environmentally responsible use of an advanced trap that ensures no bycatch or damage to the seabed and no harm to the animals.
Once caught, the Abrolhos Octopus is processed and frozen as quickly as possible, ensuring quality and freshness for the end consumer, no matter where they are in the world.
Making trade easier
The A-EU FTA will support more efficient trade by improving the transparency and consistency of border processes. Clearer, more predictable requirements will help reduce administrative burden and support reliable movement of goods between Australia and the EU.
Quote from Managing Director
We are very excited about the signing of the Free Trade Agreement between Australia and the European Union. Our premium octopus, recognised for its excellent yields and distinctive flavour and texture, is increasingly becoming a preferred choice in the European market, supported by growing global demand for MSC-certified seafood. This agreement will significantly enhance our route to market, bringing this uniquely premium product from Western Australian waters to consumers across Europe. It marks an exciting period not only for Abrolhos Octopus, but also for the broader Australian seafood industry under the “Brand Australia” banner.
