South and Southeast Asia (SSG)

Established in 1994, the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) is an important platform for security dialogue in the Indo-Pacific. It provides a setting in which members can discuss current security issues and develop cooperative measures to enhance peace and security in the region.

Australia and Vietnam are strong partners with a commitment to ASEAN centrality and a shared vision for a region that is peaceful, stable and prosperous and where sovereignty is respected.

Uzbekistan is the most populous of the Central Asian republics, with a population of 30.8 million people. Uzbekistan's population has a high youth dividend: the median age is around 27 years and over a quarter of the population is under 14.

Australia and Sri Lanka share a history of cooperation in trade and investment, education, sport, culture and development. In 2022, Australia and Sri Lanka celebrated 75 years of diplomatic relations.

Australia and Singapore have a strong and vibrant relationship. Australia was the second country to recognise Singapore when it became an independent nation in 1965. In 2015, Australia and Singapore established a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP), which encompasses all aspects of our relationship including trade, defence, science and innovation, education and the arts, digital economy and green economy. A refreshed Partnership which is expected to run from 2025 to 2035 is currently being discussed.

Nepal is a landlocked Himalayan country in South Asia bordered by India and China. It has a population of 30 million and contains eight of the world's ten highest peaks, including Mount Everest the highest mountain in the world. Kathmandu is its capital and largest city.

Australia and Maldives share a commitment to a peaceful, stable and prosperous Indian Ocean region. We established bilateral relations in 1974 and in 2024 mark 50 years of diplomatic ties. Australia opened its High Commission in Malé in 2023. 

Australia and Malaysia are longstanding partners and friends. In 2025 we will marks 70 years of Australia's diplomatic presence in Malaysia. Our relationship is based on mutual respect and our common interests, shared history and strong community links.
