In addition to outcomes under the Australia-European Union Free Trade Agreement (A-EU FTA), Australia also negotiated updates to the Wine Agreement, including protection of additional wine geographical indications (GIs), such as Prosecco, with the EU.

Further details about the Wine Agreement, including on Prosecco, can be found on the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry website.

What has the Australian Government agreed to on Prosecco?

While Australia will protect Prosecco as an EU GI, it will continue to be recognised as the name of a grape variety in Australia. This means Australian Prosecco producers can continue to label their wine Prosecco in Australia indefinitely.

Australia agreed to new labelling requirements on how Prosecco can be presented on a wine label.

We also agreed to phase out use of the term Prosecco on labels of Australian wine for export, over a period of 10 years from entry into force of the Wine Agreement. After that time, Australian wine made from Prosecco grapes will continue to be able to be exported but not to be labelled as Prosecco.
