The Elizabeth O'Neill Journalism Award commemorates the distinguished career of Elizabeth O'Neill OAM, who died in service of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Indonesia on 7 March 2007. The award builds on her tireless work to foster mutual understanding of Australia and Indonesia through accurate and informed media coverage.

Security and stability are essential for human and economic development. Australia’s investments recognise the importance of building resilience in human security and state security, and the importance of professional and accountable defence and security institutions. 

A healthy, educated workforce is critical to Timor-Leste’s future productivity and growth. Australia’s investments focus on supporting the Government of Timor-Leste to deliver essential services, including for the most vulnerable, through efficient budget allocation, improved service quality and strong oversight.

Growing and diversifying the economy is crucial for Timor-Leste’s sustainable development. A stronger economy will provide ongoing revenue to fund government services and jobs for Timorese citizens, including a growing population of young people. Australia is well placed to support private sector development, improved infrastructure and connectivity, and improved access to international and regional organisations to promote trade, and skills and labour mobility opportunities.

The Australia-Indonesia Institute (AII) was established in 1989 for the purpose of providing a focus for the collection, exchange and dissemination of information, and a source of advice, in relation to the ways in which relations between Australia and Indonesia could be encouraged, strengthened and developed.
