On 17 December 2024 at approximately 1247pm, a magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck off the coast of Vanuatu’s capital, Port Vila. The earthquake and associated aftershocks, triggered landslides and building collapses and caused damage to critical infrastructure in Port Vila.

The Australian Government supported Vanuatu, following the devastating twin Tropical Cyclones Judy and Kevin and a 6.5 magnitude earthquake in early March 2023.

Kitchen Kits provide essential supplies – such as buckets and cooking pots and utensils – to support a household to cook basic meals and store drinking water.

On 15 January 2022, the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai underwater volcano erupted, triggering a devastating tsunami and blanketing many of Tonga’s islands in a thick layer of volcanic ash. Tragically, three lives were lost as a result of the tsunami, including two Tongan nationals and a British national. Serious injuries were also reported.

Tongan residents receive emergency relief supplies from the Australian Government through the Tongan National Emergency Management Office.
