Australia is enhancing its engagement across the North East Indian Ocean by investing in maritime and disaster preparedness, and supporting opportunities for trade, investment and connectivity.

Hon’ble Mr. Piyush Goyal, Minister for Commerce and Industry, Food and Consumer Affairs and Textiles, India and Hon’ble Dan Tehan MP, Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment, Australia held a video conference on 21 December 2021 to expedite the bilateral Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA) negotiations.

Australia is strengthening our technology partnership with India through the establishment of a new Consulate-General in Bengaluru and a Centre of Excellence for Critical and Emerging Technology Policy, also to be based in India.

Australia's economic engagement with India is underpinned by the India Economic Strategy (IES), which was authored by Mr Peter Varghese, former Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (2012-2016) and High Commissioner to India (2009-2012). The IES was presented as an independent report to the Australian Government in July 2018. In November 2018, the Australian Government released its response to the IES setting out an initial implementation plan.

Mr Piyush Goyal, India's Minister of Commerce and Industry, Consumer Affairs and Food, and Public Distribution and Textiles, and Mr Dan Tehan MP, Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment, Government of Australia, have formally launched the resumption of negotiations on the India-Australia Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA).

Australia and India are working together to shape a safer and more secure global environment, launching the second round of the Australia-India Cyber and Critical Technology Partnership (AICCTP) grants program.

As we enter the 75th year of India's independence, we continue to build ongoing collaboration between Australia and India under our Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, including through the Australia-India Council (AIC) grants.
