The Internet and new technologies have brought many ground-breaking opportunities: they connect the world, facilitate information sharing, improve access to knowledge and the free circulation of ideas. During the pandemic they allowed us to stay connected and better cope with new challenges together.

35th Special Session of the Human Rights Council on Iran

The Australian Government welcomes the opportunity to respond to the First periodic report on Human Rights: Final report into certain aspects of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade Annual Report 2019-20 of the Joint Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade (the Committee).

We thank the High Commissioner and her Office for her new comprehensive report, which showcases the self-isolation of the authorities of Nicaragua from cooperation with human rights mechanisms.

We, the States subscribing to this statement and representing different regional and legal traditions, are united by the decision to extend standing invitations to special procedures mandate holders of the Human Rights Council and to honour them.

The undersigned States wish to express their views on the issue of equal participation in political and public affairs.
