Summary of publication
Fisheries are at the heart of Pacific Island economies, livelihoods, communities and culture. Since June 2010, most of DFAT’s support for Pacific fisheries has been directed through Australia’s Fisheries Development Assistance in the Pacific investment (INJ201) valued at over $135 million.
An independent evaluation of this investment (INJ201) found it delivered strong results over 15 years, improving regional governance, economic outcomes, and maritime security while reducing illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing. Regional partnerships and community initiatives were central to success, with progress noted on gender equality and climate resilience, though disability inclusion requires greater future effort.
The evaluation made 5 recommendations for DFAT to consider for current and future investments in Pacific fisheries. DFAT agrees with most of these recommendations and the management response outlines the actions DFAT will take in response.
