Summary of publication
For over 60 years, the Australian National University Indonesia Project has been a leading source of independent research, policy insight, and capacity building focused on Indonesia’s economic and social development. Supported by Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) and based at the ANU, the Indonesia Project Phase V is a $5.2 million investment (2022-2026) to strengthen evidence-based policymaking, develop the next generation of researchers, and foster enduring partnerships between Australia and Indonesia.
DFAT commissioned an independent evaluation of Phase V, conducted between 27 October and 17 December 2025 to assess its effectiveness, efficiency, inclusivity and strategic relevance. The evaluation confirmed the Project was successfully delivering its objectives and remained strongly aligned with DFAT and Australian Government development priorities. The evaluation highlighted the Project’s internationally recognised reputation, high-quality and independent research, extensive alumni and policy networks, long-term contribution to Indonesian research capacity, and ability to adapt to evolving development priorities. In recognition of its ongoing value and impact, funding support was extended to continue Phase V through December 2026.
The evaluation recommended DFAT fund a Phase VI of the Project and proposed a number of recommendations to guide a future design process.
