Australia-China-Papua New Guinea Trilateral Collaboration on Malaria and Health Security – Final Review - evaluation report and management response

The Australia-China-Papua New Guinea Trilateral Collaboration on Malaria and Health Security (TMP) ran for eight years: phase one pilot, 2016–2019, AUD 4 million; phase two (January 2020–December 2023), AUD 6 million; and a no-cost one-year extension to end-2024. The project focused on system strengthening for malaria diagnosis and operational research to inform malaria programming. Its two-pronged objectives were: 1) improved health system capacity to reduce the malaria burden in PNG; and 2) a transformative partnership between the three countries to address health security challenges through mutual learning and enhanced cooperation.

The Review was an independent final evaluation of the project. The purpose of the evaluation was to assess TMP’s progress and provide recommendations on the remaining project period and possible future interventions and investments based on lessons learnt. Significant effects from COVID-19 were noted. It was recommended there be no further phase of the TMP in its current form. There were two recommendations for the remainder of the current phase, and two recommendations for potential future programs.
