Our Partners

The ASO collaborates closely with a network of federal agencies, including the Department of Defence, AUSTRAC, the Department of Home Affairs (Home Affairs), Australian Border Force (ABF), and Australian Federal Police (AFP). This collaboration aims to promote compliance with Australian sanctions law and address potential contraventions.

The ASO and Defence Export Controls (DEC) work together on exports subject to both sanctions and defence export control laws. This includes sharing information on sanctions permit applications that correspond with Defence Export Controls permit applications. The ASO may also seek DEC’s technical assessments to inform decision-making.

In partnership with Home Affairs, the ASO focuses on travel bans under Australian sanctions law, while the ABF address’s contraventions of the Customs Act 1901. This collaboration with Home Affairs and ABF also involves sharing intelligence on trade data and working with industry to promote voluntary compliance with sanctions regulations.

The ABF and AFP play crucial roles in enforcing Australian sanctions law. The ABF is responsible for halting imports and exports suspected of contravening sanctions. The ASO coordinates with ABF, DEC, and other relevant agencies to investigate and address potential contraventions and may refer cases to the AFP for criminal prosecution in line with our compliance policy.
