Fiji Disaster Preparedness Program: Design Document—National Disasters Management Office (NDMO) Proposal

Summary of publication

This documents details the proposal from the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO), Fiji for funding for training and awareness programs for communities to better mitigate, respond to and recover from the effects of disasters.

The proposed project includes:

  • training for chiefs and village leaders on how to complete initial damage assessments following a disaster
  • community based Early Warning System exercises
  • community Standard Operating Procedures exercises
  • training for civil servants in disaster management plans, programs and procedures
  • public awareness campaigns on disaster preparedness.

Expected outcomes are that:

  • all provincial and village leaders in all fourteen provinces, and over 150 government and non-government administrators, will be trained in disaster assessment and response by the end of 2011
  • all 1,171 villages in Fiji will have disaster management plans by the end of 2012
  • each village will be self-reliant with food during and after an event by the end of 2012.
