Ambassador to Counter Modern Slavery, People Smuggling and Human Trafficking

Ms Jane Duke

Ms Duke commenced as Ambassador to Counter Modern Slavery, People Smuggling and Human Trafficking in August 2025.

The Ambassador plays a leading role in driving international cooperation and close collaboration with partners to strengthen responses to modern slavery.

The Ambassador is also fundamental in promoting Australia’s work as Co-Chair of the Bali Process – the preeminent regional consultative forum for addressing the abhorrent crimes of people smuggling, human trafficking and related transnational crime.

Ms Duke is a senior career officer with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and has served overseas as Consul General Los Angeles, Ambassador to ASEAN Jakarta and Deputy High Commissioner to Malaysia. She also served as Counsellor (Immigration) at Australia’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in Geneva.

In Canberra, Ms Duke has held senior positions in Southeast Asia, the Americas, Europe and has also held senior positions in the immigration portfolio.

Ms Duke holds a Bachelor of Arts (Asian Studies)/ Bachelor of Laws (Hons) from the Australian National University and a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice from the University of Technology Sydney. She is admitted to the NSW Supreme Court as a solicitor.
