AUSMAT deployed to further support Solomon Islands COVID-19 response

Further humanitarian support for Tonga

HMAS Adelaide arrived in Tonga today with additional humanitarian and medical supplies, engineering equipment and helicopters to support logistics and distribution as Australia continues its support in partnership with the Tongan Government following the volcano and tsunami.

On 15 January 2022, the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai underwater volcano erupted, triggering a devastating tsunami and blanketing many of Tonga’s islands in a thick layer of volcanic ash. Tragically, three lives were lost as a result of the tsunami, including two Tongan nationals and a British national. Serious injuries were also reported.

Tongan residents receive emergency relief supplies from the Australian Government through the Tongan National Emergency Management Office.

RAAF C-17A flight with Australian supplies arrives in Tonga

In response to a request from the Government of Tonga, a Royal Australian Air Force C-17A aircraft arrived in Tonga today with essential supplies to support our friend and neighbour in its recovery efforts following the volcanic eruption and tsunami on 15 January.
