Myanmar

The Australian Government has grave concerns about the ongoing political and humanitarian crisis in Myanmar. Australia condemns widespread human rights abuses and violations by the Myanmar military regime, and remains deeply concerned by its ongoing attacks against civilians including airstrikes.

Eight years ago, the Myanmar military launched a campaign of systemic violence against Rohingya communities, leading to mass displacement, widespread human rights violations and abuses, and untold suffering. Today, more than 1.1 million Rohingya remain displaced in Bangladesh, along with hundreds of thousands elsewhere in the region and internally in Myanmar.

We extend our deepest sympathies and condolences to the peoples of Myanmar and Thailand following the earthquake that struck central Myanmar on March 28, 2025.

Australia – Myanmar Development Partnership Plan 2024–2029 (DPP) translates into action the development and humanitarian priorities Australia shares with the people of Myanmar. 

Today marks four years since the Myanmar military regime overthrew the democratically elected government in Myanmar, creating one of the largest crises in the Indo-Pacific. 

We are deeply concerned by the worsening human rights and humanitarian crisis across Myanmar.  This crisis is exacerbated by the escalation of violence, as well as intercommunal tension. The regime’s ongoing and violent repression of the people of Myanmar is unacceptable.

Today marks seven years since the Myanmar military’s violent attacks caused mass displacement of Rohingya communities.

In accordance with item 6, regulation 6 of the Autonomous Sanctions Regulations 2011 (Cth) (the Regulations), the Minister for Foreign Affairs (the Minister) has previously designated for targeted financial sanctions, or declared for travel bans (together 'listed'), by legislative instrument

The Australian Government has today imposed additional targeted sanctions on five entities with direct links to the Myanmar military regime.
