Australia has serious concerns about the military coup in Myanmar and for its democratic transition.

Australia and the Philippines have launched celebrations for our 75th Anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2021. Officially launched in Manila on Australia Day, the year will involve a range of exciting activities and initiatives. They will engage friends and partners across both countries and highlight the breadth and depth of our cooperation and engagement.

Australia’s Ambassador to Myanmar was today able to speak with Professor Sean Turnell, following extensive Australian Government advocacy for consular access to him in detention.

The Australian Government has been advised that Australian citizen Ms Cheng Lei was formally arrested in China on 5 February, after 6 months of detention.

Australia has deep concerns with the ruling of the Pre-Trial Chamber of the International Criminal Court that it has jurisdiction in relation to the ‘Situation in Palestine’.

The Australian Government is deeply concerned about reports of Australian and other foreign nationals being detained arbitrarily in Myanmar. 

Australia welcomes the extension of the New START Treaty (Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty) between the United States and Russia.

Australia is deeply concerned by Russian authorities’ arrest and subsequent sentencing of Alexei Navalny to two years and eight months’ imprisonment
