The purpose of this Treaty is to recognise and affirm the commitment between the Parties to protect their sovereignty, secure their mutual defence and security interests and contribute to regional stability and security, by strengthening and expanding defence cooperation through enhanced capability, interoperability and integration.

This Memorandum of Understanding (the MoU) works alongside existing climate and energy cooperation between Tuvalu and Australia, by establishing the Tuvalu - Australia Renewable Energy Partnership (the Partnership), supported by the Australia - Pacific Partnership for Energy Transition (APPET).

On 19 June 2025, the Hon Matt Thistlethwaite, Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat to promote mutually beneficial partnerships between Australia and Africa.

Acknowledging the success of cooperation established through the 2016 Memorandum of Understanding on Strengthening Tourism Cooperation, the 2006 Memorandum of Understanding relating to the China Approved Destination Status (hereafter referred to as ADS) scheme and the 1999 Exchange of Letters that established an Arrangement for the purposes of the ADS scheme
