Korean popular music and (multi)cultural understanding

Project summary

Sector: Building Cultural Understanding / Society and Culture
Country location: Australia, Republic of Korea
Grantee: Macquarie University

Project Description

In recent years, Korean popular music (K-pop) has gained a small but steady audience in Australia. This challenges Australia's existing popular culture landscape, which is dominated by the US and Europe. This project asks: can K-pop encourage Australian audiences to develop a closer cultural understanding of Korea, and of other cultures as well? Given that Australia is geographically a part of the Asia-Pacific, and relies on strong political and trade links with the region, K-pop may provide young Australians with an opportunity to explore beyond the Anglosphere and develop valuable cultural and language skills for an increasingly globalised future.
