Meet our 2016 grantees

Building greater cultural knowledge and understanding in regional universities

Project summary

Sector: Building Cultural Understanding / Society and Culture
Country location: Australia, Republic of Korea
Grantee: Southern Cross University

Project Description

The aim of the project is to foster closer linkages, engagement and cultural understanding between psychology at Southern Cross University and Kyungnam University, regional universities in Australia and Korea. Psychology students work with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures, so it is particularly important to gain greater understanding, knowledge and understanding of different cultural perspectives and also develop cross-cultural communicative competence. This is particularly important at regional universities where there are fewer opportunities to interact and develop these skills. These goals will be achieved through (1) an exchange program between academics/students at the two institutions, (2) joint collaborative projects/studies investigating language and intercultural communication and understanding in Australians and Koreans, (3) internationalization of the curriculum – innovative ways of embedding cross-cultural skills, knowledge and understanding into the undergraduate curriculum, and (4) innovative ways of using social media to build closer linkages and ties between students, so that they can share, engage and exchange ideas, knowledge and experiences. The project team leaders, Dr Heather Winskel, Southern Cross University, Professor Jeung-Ryeul Cho and Dr Tae-Hoon Kim, Kyungnam University have complimentary expertise and skills in language and cross-cultural and intercultural communication and teaching.
