Industry and researchers present unsolved mathematical problems to groups of mathematicians including at Study Group Workshops (SGW). The participating mathematicians may then choose to collaborate with any of the presenters to work toward solving their problem.

The Australia-Japan Foundation provided funding and support for La Trobe University postgraduate students and staff to participate in SGW2015, held at the Institute of Mathematics for Industry Kyushu University and the University of Tokyo. Two postgraduate students, Chris Taylor and Stacey Mendan, collaborated in a solving a problem presented by Hitachi and provided a robust and efficient solution.

All La Trobe participants were excited about the opportunity to experience Japanese culture, work on industry-initiated mathematical problems in an international arena, develop strong collaborative relationships, and exchange skills and knowledge.
