Project summary
JOLT Arts will present MOJO Touring Sonic Festival in Tokyo, Japan, and collaborative Tokyo recording sessions showcasing Australian and Japanese artists as part of JOLT's touring Sonic Festival from 10–13 Nov 2015. JOLT is a Melbourne-based not-for-profit organisation that presents and creates sonic art projects (www.joltarts.org).
This JOLT Arts Japanese/Australian collaboration began with the successful tour of Extremities: JOLT Japanese/Australian Sonic Arts Festival in Japan, September 2012. This was a cross-cultural sonic art festival promoting the quality and cultural flavour of Australian sound artists, alongside leading Japanese sonic artists.
Since then, JOLT has presented 'Pitch Black Japan Exchange' (October 2013 to August 2014), a three-phase sonic arts project that included activity in both Australia and Japan. This project incorporated the creation of work between Japanese and Australian sound artists for presentation in highly regarded festival venues in both Japan and Australia.
Leading Australian sound artists performing in the MOJO Touring Sonic Festival in Tokyo include: Phillip Brophy, BOLT Ensemble, Amplified Elephants and James Hullick. Australian artists will also make collaborative recordings with Japanese artists (Pardon Kimura and others). For MOJO, JOLT is working with Tokyo-based artist/producer Cal Lyall – a central figure in experimental sonic art practice in Tokyo. Lyall is also director of the Subvalent Record Label and the Test Tone Concert series, and has selected the sound artists to be presented alongside the Australians in this bi-partisan cultural project. The project will celebrate the sharing of cutting-edge sonic culture between leading Japanese and Australian musicians and sound artists.
