The objective of the project is to take up a collaborator residency position at Aichi University of the Arts as a composer in order to interact with staff and students creatively and act as a mentor, present Australian Asian-Pacific musical aesthetics publically, and compose and rehearse works for Japanese performers.
The principle objective is to create a compositional engagement around the Japanese aesthetic of ma as both a musical and personal space for something creative to emerge under the Society and Culture area. The project will achieve these interactive objectives through student compositional mentoring, public lecturing on Australian living colour aesthetics in music, and composing music for Japan.
I will give a lecture at AUA and a formal public lecture, in conjunction with Professor Kobayashi, at Nagoya University (15 December) on my composition and aesthetic issues on living colours related to the Australian musical engagement with honkyoku, ma, calligraphy and spatial flow principles, as well as conduct a master course in composition with AUA students (14-18 December). I will also compose a commissioned work for harp, Emergence from Darkness, exploring koto techniques and have a solo piano work performed in a public concert alongside works by Akira Kobayashi and students.
