Australian Playground in Ichinoseki (Sister City)

Project summary

Central Highlands Regional Council worked with Ichinoseki City Council to create and deliver an inclusive, all abilities Australian playground in Japan. The project aligns with both councils sincere commitment to the Sister City philosophy and objectives to deepen mutual understanding and goodwill between the two regions.

The recreation landmark, which depicts the iconic Australian outdoor culture, will include a wheelchair accessible Liberty Swing, a flying fox, springers, a fort, barbecue facilities and a picnic shelter.

The project objectives include the provision of economic benefit to Australian and Japanese business, creating shared learning and exchange of ideas in design, manufacturing and construction, sharing knowledge about inclusion and all abilities to enhance the quality of life for people with disabilities, providing tourism opportunities for Ichinoseki and breaking down barriers for trade and export.
