Intensifying the response: Halting the spread of HIV is the Australian Government's new strategy on HIV, which will guide the country's international development assistance on the epidemic. It builds on the lessons learned and the significant changes that have taken place in the HIV arena since 2004, when Australia's first international development strategy for HIV, Meeting the Challenge, was launched. The strategy builds on Australia's achievements and lessons learned. It forms part of our commitment to substantially expand development assistance to 0.5 per cent of Gross National Income by 2015 and sharpen the focus on aid efficiency and effectiveness.

This document also includes a list of six Priorities outlining Australia's commitment to the strategy:

• Priority One: Intensifying HIV prevention
• Priority Two: Optimising the role of health services within HIV responses
• Priority Three: Strengthening coordination and capacity to scale up HIV responses
• Priority Four: Reviewing legal and policy frameworks to enable effective responses to HIV
• Priority Five: Building the evidence base for an effective HIV response
• Priority Six: Demonstrating and fostering leadership on HIV.
