Agreement between the Government of Australia and the Government of the Russian Federation on Cooperation in the Use of Nuclear Energy for Peaceful Purposes
Description of issue
The Agreement provides for supply of Australian uranium for peaceful uses in Russia's civil nuclear energy program, and for cooperation in a wide range of peaceful nuclear activities. Under the Agreement, any transferred uranium, or other nuclear-related material, equipment, components or technology would be subject to strict safeguards consistent with Australia's long-standing policy designed to ensure that the use of Australian nuclear material, or cooperation by Australia in nuclear matters, is solely for peaceful purpose.
Date of effect
The Agreement was signed in Sydney on the 7th of September 2007 and was tabled in Parliament on 14th May 2008, and entered into force on 11th November 2010.
