MEDIA RELEASE

An interim ferry service for Tonga will commence in April with a charter vessel from Malaysia.

Australia, New Zealand and Tonga have jointly funded the ferry charter.

The interim charter replaces the Princess Ashika which tragically sunk off the Tongan coast on 5 August 2009.

During the Pacific Islands Forum 2009 in Cairns, Australia and New Zealand undertook to help the Tongan Government re-establish this vital transport link between the islands.

Australia and New Zealand have each provided A$1.9 million. The Tongan Government will cover local costs such as fuel and vessel maintenance and will be responsible for on-shore management arrangements.

Safe travel between the islands of Tonga is a vital lifeline for its people. Finding a vessel to operate in the challenging marine environment around Tonga has been a priority for the Governments of Australia, New Zealand and Tonga.

The charter vessel Ajang Subuh has undergone an independent inspection by internationally recognised survey company London Off-shore Consultants, and the vessel has been found to be seaworthy and fit for purpose.

Australia and New Zealand's support will help ensure the Tongan people have a regular, safe and reliable method of transport between the islands.
