The President of Hungary, His Excellency Mr Arpad Goncz,
will visit Australia from 15 to 21 February as a guest of
the Australian Government.
The President arrives in Sydney on 15 February, and
starts his visit officially in Canberra on Tuesday 16
February. His appointments in Canberra will include meetings
with the Prime Minister, Mr John Howard, the Deputy Prime
Minister and Minister for Trade, Mr Tim Fischer, the
Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr Alexander Downer, and the
Leader of the Opposition, Mr Kim Beazley.
He will also visit the War Memorial, meet members of
Canberra's Hungarian community and inspect a gas-powered bus
produced by West Australian company Transcom International
and currently being trialled in Hungary.
In Sydney on Wednesday 17 and Thursday 18 February, the
President will meet the New South Wales Premier, Mr Bob
Carr, and attend a State luncheon in his honour. His other
engagements include accepting a doctorate at the University
of Technology, Sydney, in recognition of his contribution to
literature,democracy and social justice; opening a business
and trade forum; and meeting the Hungarian community.
Appointments in Melbourne on Friday 19 and Saturday 20
February will include another business seminar, a meeting
with academics and authors at Monash University; and a
meeting with the Hungarian community.
