The first round of Australia-India Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement negotiations was held in New Delhi on 28-29 July 2011. Australia's delegation was led by Ms Jan Adams, First Assistant Secretary, Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. India's delegation was led by Mr J. K. Dadoo, Joint Secretary, Department of Commerce.
The first round of discussions focussed on the broad architecture of the agreement and negotiating procedures. Overall, it was a positive start to the negotiations and a significant intersessional work program for the coming months was established. Both sides agreed to exchange tariff and trade data as well as information on the domestic regulation of services and investment. Further, both sides agreed to begin the process of exchanging draft provisions (chapters) covering goods, services, investment and other institutional parts of the Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement.
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade encourages interested parties to lodge a submission on the Australia-India Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement. Industry consultation and the submission process will inform Australia's negotiating positions.
