Project Description

The Australian Art Orchestra's (AAO) Creative Music Intensive residency, established in 2014, is conceived to provide a unique professional development program for musicians from Tasmania, across Australia and internationally that explores the meeting of cultures and practice. In 2017, the cultural focus of the Creative Music Intensive will have two streams, Korean and Indigenous Australian music. Artists Bae Il Dong and Sunny Kim will join artists from Arnhem Land Daniel Wilfred and David Wilfred. The ten-day practice based residency invites over twenty emerging musicians from all over Australia to experience workshops, lectures and exploratory sessions bringing together two extraordinary musical traditions.

At the conclusion of the Creative Music Intensive the Australian Art Orchestra will present Bae Il Dong and Daniel Wilfred at the Arts Centre Melbourne and as part of the Adelaide Oz Asia Festival allowing audiences to experience two very different approaches to the human voice working in concert in a remarkable work, Seoul Meets Arnhem Land: Ecstatic Voice.

The AAO will also host Bae Il Dong and Sunny Kim at the inaugural, Interlingua Symposium: extending improvisational language in music which will feature performance and discussion designed to share our work within the field of cross-cultural music practice.
