World Refugee Day 2011

This year the global theme for World Refugee Day on 20 June is 'One refugee without hope is too many.'

This year's World Refugee Day falls in the 60th anniversary year for UNHCR and also comes shortly ahead of the 60th anniversary of the 1951 Refugee Convention on 28 July.

Through the simple statement, 'One refugee without hope is too many, 'UNHCR hopes that people will reflect on how they can join UNHCR in helping the more than 10 million refugees around the world who have lost everything.

On Wednesday 15 June, UNHCR launched a global media campaign to encourage members of the public to 'Do One Thing' to show their solidarity for refugees and displaced people around the world. This could be by helping spread the word about UNHCR and refugees, to volunteer time and expertise, to get involved in a community group or to donate to UNHCR's work. Over the next six months UNHCR will increase awareness about the forcibly displaced and stateless by telling their personal stories.

Reflective of the scope and magnitude of displacement worldwide, much of the Australia's humanitarian assistance is directed to assisting and protecting displaced populations.

Australia was the 10th largest donor to UNHCR in 2010, and supports the organisation's legal mandate to assist and protect refugees and displaced populations.
Australia's funding is providing emergency medical and shelter assistance to refugees and displaced persons as well as assisting them to resume productive lives.
