World Polio Day—24 October

Category
Development

The Australian Government is committed to eradicate polio and has dedicated $72 million for polio eradication and routine immunisation over the next four years. This is in addition to the $20 million already committed to the Global Polio Eradication Initiative in 2014/2015.

To eradicate polio globally we need targeted programs in the remaining endemic countries as well as strong routine immunisations in all countries, to maintain polio-free status.

The global polio effort is reaching the 'endgame' stage with priority directed at the remaining endemic areas in Pakistan and Afghanistan. The world is on the verge of ending polio, eradicating a human disease for the second time in history.
