UNDP is a key partner for the Australian aid program. Its policies and programs align with the priorities of the Australian aid program. UNDP's global reach is an asset in countries where it is not feasible or practical for Australia to operate.
UNDP's coordinating role within the UN development system also supports Australia's broader interest in a well-coordinated, efficient and effective UN.
In 2008, AusAID established a partnership framework with UNDP [PDF 480kb] as the overarching instrument for strengthened cooperation to 2015.
It sets out guiding principles, shared objectives, implementation arrangements and reporting, monitoring and evaluation for the partners. Under the partnership framework, core funding of $ 109.6 million was provided between 2008-09 and 2013-14.
A mid-term review of the partnership framework in 2012 concluded that UNDP's performance has generally been good but there was scope to further strengthen cooperation in future years.
