Indonesia tackles bureaucratic reform

Category
Development

Australia recognises that Indonesia is taking serious steps to tackle bureaucratic reform. Several Australian Government programs are working with Indonesia in areas such as anti-corruption, law and justice and human rights.

At a meeting on Friday, 11 March 2011 between Indonesia's Vice President Boediono and the Acting Prime Minister, Wayne Swan, Australia confirmed its support for establishing a small team of experts in the Vice President's office to help him to drive forward his agenda of reforming Indonesia's bureaucracy.

Bureaucreatic reform a priority

Indonesia's bureaucratic reform is focused on:

  • improving the quality of public services to all Indonesian's, including the poor
  • eliminating corruption
  • improving the quality of decision-making
  • using budgets efficiently.

Indonesia's President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has identified bureaucratic reform as his number one development priority.

The latest phase of support builds on the AusAID-funded Australian Public Service Commission work in Indonesia over the past several years to implement merit-based appointments in the public service and to better align public service resources with the needs of the community.
