Women in Papua New Guinea are now participating more in the once male dominated sport of cricket, and their achievements are changing peoples' mindsets about gender equality.
About twenty young women from two Port Moresby high schools participated in a cricket match on Wednesday 25 November 2015 to showcase cricket for women and to commemorate the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women – which is also marked as White Ribbon Day.
The young women play cricket under the Kriket Bilong Olgeta program – an initiative funded by Australia and delivered by Cricket PNG. This program provides women, girls and people with a disability an opportunity to play cricket. It also promotes healthier lifestyles, inclusiveness and respect for all people.
Participants and cricket coordinators - both male and female – understood the link between sports participation and gender equality, with one school girl summing up the feeling of the day: 'This game is a nice game where everyone can participate in and relay the message to stop violence against women, I mean females in the country have every right to take part in every game'.
