Fiji Flood Relief

Category

Foreign Minister Stephen Smith has announced Australia is providing $3 million for immediate relief efforts for those affected by severe flooding in Fiji and to assist with longer term recovery and reconstruction.

During the first two days of the deluge over 400mm of rain fell on Nadi. This is the equivalent of more than one month's worth of rainfall. Since 8 January flooding has claimed at least 11 lives, and forced more than 10,500 from their homes. At least 150 evacuation centres have been opened to accommodate those needing temporary shelter.

Australian High Commission staff in Suva are in constant contact with the Fiji National Disaster Management Office to determine how Australia can best assist those in need.

Following Tropical Cyclone Gene, which struck Fiji last year, Australia provided $500,000 towards relief and rehabilitation efforts. This included $50,000 to the Fiji Red Cross Society for the replenishment of its emergency supplies in time for the current official cyclone season. Stores are now fully stocked and are ready to be used as required.
