Australian support to the mining sector in Mongolia

Category
Development

In response to Mongolia's requests for assistance in the mining sector, Australia has provided funding through the World Bank to strengthen Mongolia's mining and regulatory framework.

In June 2010, AusAID supported the development of the legislative framework for the mining sector in Mongolia. A working group of Mongolian officials responsible for completing the review of current legislation and making recommendations for amendments to the Minerals Law visited Australia to study best practice mineral policy and legislation. In addition, technical assistance was provided through an experienced mining sector legal advisor, who assisted the working group to identify and prioritise issues and gaps in the legislation which needed to be addressed in the amendments.

Australia is currently funding a groundwater management project in the south of Mongolia, supporting the sustainable development of an important mining region.
