During his recent visit to Japan, Minister Ciobo went to the Australian Short Film Theatre in Roppongi, central Tokyo. The event showcased Australia's film excellence through award-winning highlights from the Flickerfest International Short Film Festival. Held outdoors in a mini 'land down under' setting, Tokyo locals got a taste of Australian culture with virtual reality displays and stalls selling premium Australian food, wine and products.

The Australian Short Film Theatre is part of Australia now Japan 2018, an eight-month program promoting collaboration and exchange, expanding networks and presenting Australian innovation, creativity and lifestyle to new audiences in Japan. Australia now is DFAT's flagship public diplomacy program, celebrating Australia in a country or region of significance each year. In 2019, the program takes place across South East Asia.

Next on the Australia now Japan program is the exhibition: "Universal Principles / Unique Projects: Architecture Re-Setting the Agenda", exploring 12 iconic Australian architecture projects through drawing, miniature models and digital media at the Tokyo Sky View in Roppongi. The exhibition was specially curated by leading Australian architect, Wendy Lewin for Australia now.
