MEDIA RELEASE

From working with ex-street boys in Brazil to training court staff in Fiji,
Jacqueline Emery is one young South Australian who is making a difference.

The Australian Youth Ambassador will leave Australia this weekend to start
her assignment in Fiji, but hopes to speak to as many South Australians as
possible at the show before she goes.

Instead of the usual spills of show rides and stalls, visitors to the AusAID
exhibition can learn what young Australians are doing throughout our region to
support international development.

The interactive display will also use the latest audio-visual technology to
create a very different experience for people to get an idea of what it feels
like to live in a place where finding clean, fresh water is a daily
challenge.

The Parliamentary Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Mrs Chris Gallus MP, will
also join South Australian youth ambassadors at the show today.

Mrs Gallus said the display highlights the plight of more than 2 billion
people in the Asia-Pacific region who don't have access to hygienic
sanitation and 700 million who people don't have access to safe drinking
water.

'It might not be the kind of experience people associate with the show,
but it will definitely have a profound and lasting impact on the people who see
it.'

The AusAID display will also show what Australia is doing to help.

'Australia is working with developing countries, sharing our knowledge
and expertise in managing water resources.

'We are also funding projects to encourage better water governance
ensuring the supply of safe clean drinking water, and projects for the removal
and treatment of effluent,' Mrs Gallus said.

Show goers in Adelaide are the first to see the display, which AusAID plans
to take to shows throughout the country.

Note: Mrs Gallus and youth ambassadors will be on hand at
the AusAID stand at the Adelaide Show, Jubilee Pavilion, Royal Adelaide Show
Grounds from 12.15pm on 2 September 2003.
