The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has released the 1999-2000
edition of the publication Trade in Services, Australia. It
contains detailed information of the components and destinations of Australia's
exports and imports of services for 10 financial years. It also contains
information about Australia's international trade in services by each Australian
State and Territory and inter-country comparisons of international services
trade.

Highlights of Australia's trade in services in 1999-2000 include a seven
per cent increase in the value of services trade to $57.9 billion.
Exports of services increased by eight per cent to $28.2 billion, while
imports of services grew by six per cent to $29.7 billion. In real
terms, exports increased by five per cent, while imports grew by seven per
cent.

Over the decade to 1999-2000, exports of services grew at an average annual
rate of nine per cent (compared to merchandise exports which grew at seven
per cent per year), while imports of services grew at an average annual
rate of six per cent.

In 1999-2000, exports of travel services accounted for 47 per cent of services
exports, while passenger travel and other transportation accounted for a
further 21 per cent. The United States was the single largest destination
for Australia's services exports in 1999-2000, taking 16 per cent ($4.6
billion) of the total. Japan was the second largest source of export
income ($3.4 billion).
