A meeting of the Smartraveller Consultative Group (SCG) was
convened by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT)
on 12 November.
Representatives from airlines flying to Indonesia (Bali and
Jakarta), tour operators, the Australian Federation of Travel
Agents (AFTA), and the insurance industry attended.
The meeting considered the implications for travellers to
Indonesia, including Bali, at this time following the
executions of the Bali bombers.
The airlines present, Qantas, Jetstar, Virgin Blue and
Garuda, all indicated arrangements were in place to allow
travellers to defer or change their travel plans.
AFTA has details of the terms of these arrangements on its
website. DFAT will
provide a link to the AFTA website on www.smartraveller.gov.au.
It is important for travellers to look at the specific
condition under which they can change their travel plans and
other arrangements such as travel insurance.
All Australians who are thinking of changing plans should
contact travel providers as soon as possible to take advantage
of the stipulated period during which changes can be made
without fees being applied.
The Government welcomes the responsible approach of the
travel industry. The arrangements put in place continue the
excellent understanding the travel industry has also shown on
many previous occasions in recent years where security and
safety issues have emerged overseas.
