MEDIA RELEASE

I am pleased to participate in the launch
of a book about the development of the nursing profession in Samoa that has been
made possible through the Australian Government's overseas aid program.

The book, 'Samoan Nursing - The Story of
Women Developing a Profession' presents a powerful story on the transformation
of nursing in Samoa from one based on a 19th Century European model to a modern
style which, importantly, incorporates local values and culture.

The book was researched and written as a
component of the Samoan School of Nursing Project which was funded by the
Australian Government.

The project enabled the refurbishment and
equipping of an old colonial timber building to a level required for tertiary
education, and provided intensive training and staff development to strengthen
skills in key areas - ultimately helping to provide better health for
Samoans.

The University of Technology, Sydney,
which managed the Samoan School of Nursing project, is providing funds to have
the book translated into Samoan.
