Australia established diplomatic ties with the former Yugoslav Republic
of Macedonia in October 1995. At that time it was announced that the two
Governments had agreed to reciprocal non-resident representation which,
through periodic visits of officers, would allow them to perform the full
range of diplomatic and consular functions, including inter-governmental
relations, commercial exchanges, issue of passports and personal legal matters.
The Department said the accreditation of Mr Campbell as the first Australian
Ambassador to the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia would further contribute
to the building of a harmonious and mutually beneficial relationship between
the two countries.
Mr Campbell joined the then Department of Foreign Affairs in 1975 and subsequently
served in Buenos Aires, Lima and Geneva. From 1987 to 1988 he was an Exchange
Officer with the Department of External Affairs in Ottawa and from 1989
to 1992 he was Counsellor at the Australian Embassy in Washington. Mr Campbell
has headed Australia's mission in Belgrade since his arrival there in May
l994, and has had non-resident accreditation as Ambassador to Romania since
June 1995.
