On Monday 8 March 1999, International Women's Day, the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mrs Kathy Sullivan, will address an International Women's Day Breakfast, in Parramatta, NSW.

The breakfast will be hosted by the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM Australia Inc.), at Lachlan's Restaurant, Old Government House, Parramatta, 7am for 7.15am.

UNIFEM Australia Inc. is one of 19 national committees throughout the world promoting the work of UNIFEM to support poor women in developing countries. It is a voluntary fund-raising organisation, in association with the United Nations Development Programme.

Mrs Sullivan will speak on the topic: Women in Aid - Making a Real Difference. On 16 March 1999, Mrs Sullivan, the Federal Member for Moncrieff, will become Australia's longest-serving Female Member of the House of Representatives. On 29 March she will become the longest serving female Federal Parliamentarian. Mrs Sullivan shall also celebrate 25 years in Parliament in May. This includes 10 years as a Queensland Senator and 15 years as a Member of the House of Representatives.

Her International Women's Day speech will focus on the effects of the Asia crisis on women including higher unemployment and falling incomes. Mrs Sullivan will outline how Australia is helping women and their families in developing countries to cope with the Asia crisis.

In her role as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mrs Sullivan has responsibility for Australia's development assistance program. She is also Australia's Special Representative for Demining. Media Contacts:
