The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) today released a new publication which highlights the trade flows and trends of individual Australian states and territories for financial year 2003-04.
Australia's Trade by State and Territory, 2003-04 provides a comprehensive analysis of each state and territory's trade in goods by commodity, level of processing and by partner country. Services trade for each state and territory is also analysed.
The information contained in the publication illustrates Australia's diversity as a trading nation, with each state and territory producing a differing array of goods and services for export which together were worth $142.9 billion in 2003-04.
New South Wales exporters returned $34 billion in revenue to the Australian economy in 2003-04 through commodities such as coal, aluminium, copper ores, beef, medicaments, wool and refined petroleum.
Victoria, with exports worth $25.7 billion in 2003-04, earned more than a third of its export revenue through trade in manufactured goods such as motor vehicles and aluminium. Rural exports such as dairy products, wool and meat (both beef and sheep meat) were also strong contributors to the state's export trade.
Primary industries were the major export earners in Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia with around half of each of these states' export revenues earned through export of primary products.
In the Northern Territory, increased exports of pearls and gems resulted in manufactured products occupying a greater share of NT goods and services exports, while services exports dominate in the Australian Capital Territory.
Major Tasmanian exports in 2003-04 included zinc, aluminium, crustaceans, beef, and copper ores.
