I am pleased to announce Dr Meryl Williams has been appointed the new Chair
of the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) Board
of Management and President of its Policy Advisory Council.
Dr Williams has a very distinguished record in fisheries and has held a
number of very senior positions both here in Australia and overseas. She is the
immediate past Director-General of the WorldFish Centre and was a past Director
of the Australian Institute of Marine Science. Her new appointments are for
three years from 5 August 2004.
I would also like to pay a special tribute to the retiring Chair and
President, Professor Beth Woods OAM. Professor Woods has taken a new position
as Executive Director R&D Strategy in the Queensland Department of Primary
Industries and Fisheries.
ACIAR plays a key role in unlocking the potential of agriculture, fisheries
and forestry sectors of partner countries in the Asian-Pacific region. This
research is making a very significant contribution to raising the incomes of the rural
poor in the region.
Background information on Dr Williams can be found at ACIAR's website www.aciar.gov.au.
